The purpose of this page is to
provide potential interns with a description of available internships at
Mediation Works Incorporated.
About Mediation Works
Incorporated
Mediation Works Incorporated (MWI) is dedicated to providing innovative dispute
resolution services and training to clients seeking to resolve difficult
disputes. MWI's Dispute Resolution Services
include mediation, organizational ombuds
services, facilitation and dispute management system
design. MWI’s
Public Service Initiatives provide pro-bono mediation services to indigent
families, landlords, tenants and other low-income parties called to
Massachusetts BMC, District, Juvenile, Probate, Land, and Superior Courts throughout
Greater Boston. MWI's Training Programs
include public and private "in-house" basic and advanced mediation and
negotiation training programs and other
dispute resolution workshops and seminars.
Interning at MWI
Our staff is committed to ensuring that MWI is a place where
interns will enhance their knowledge of mediation and negotiation and leave with
a better understanding of the ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) field.
Although MWI internships are unpaid, interns are provided with opportunities to
participate in MWI trainings, attend conferences, network with ADR
professionals, and where appropriate, mediate cases.
Who You Are
You are confident, outgoing, and have a desire to invest your
skills and energy into a dynamic and growing dispute resolution firm.
You have strong interpersonal skills, tenacity, patience, and have the ability
to get the job done. You are able to balance and prioritize multiple tasks
and are committed to spending 15-40 hours per week for a minimum of one semester.

DESCRIPTIONS
MWI
Interns - General Requirements
In addition to their above primary role, interns will be
periodically be asked to complete the following administrative duties as
requested:
- filing
- data entry
- assistance with
mailings
- copying
- training
material assembly
- other
administrative duties as needed
We are seeking interns
with the following skill set:
- Proficient in
Microsoft Word, Excel and other MS Office applications
- Excellent
communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to
follow through with short and long-term projects in a timely manner
- Organized and
detail oriented
- Able to work
independently and/or as part of a team
The
Court and Divorce Mediation Program Intern
Definition: Assistant to the Director of
Mediation who oversees MWI's Court & Divorce Mediation Program.
- Enter cases into a database, file paperwork
- Conduct follow-up phone call surveys with clients
- Create and mail quarterly reports
- Create and mail monthly schedule to each court
- Create packets for mediators: photocopies
- Assist with design of marketing materials: articles, print materials,
web pages
- Distribute marketing materials
- Observe mediations and co-mediate after participating in MWI's 40 hour
mediation training (free for interns)
The
Role of the Negotiation Programs Intern
Definition: The Negotiation Programs Intern will work closely with the
Director of Negotiation Programs on a variety of projects. The intern will contribute to the overall success of the department by working
with the Director in developing, marketing, and implementing customized on-site
and open-enrollment negotiation and conflict resolution Programs with clients in
the corporate, institutional, university and non-profit sectors. For more

The Negotiation Programs Intern will:

Assist with the development and preparation of negotiation cases and other
materials
- Conduct
market research, create reports and generate databases on corporations,
universities, and related professional organizations
- Contact
clients to schedule diagnostic interviews
- Coordinate
mailings for Open-Enrollment Negotiation Skills Workshops and a variety of marketing
initiatives
- Analyze
data and compile reports on workshop evaluations
- Create
PowerPoint slides/presentations to be used in MWI's Customized Negotiation Skills
Workshops
- Maintain
and update the negotiation materials database
- Assist
with the creation and compilation of materials for workshops
In addition to the general skill set, the Negotiation
Programs Intern should:
- Have
a basic familiarity with, and interest in, the concepts of principled
negotiation as outlined in the book
Getting to Yes (second edition,
authored by Roger Fisher, William Ury and Bruce Patton Penguin Books, New
York, 1991.)
- Be
comfortable with, and competent in, conducting extensive internet research
- Be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Some graphic
design ability preferred but not necessary
The
Role of Commercial Mediation and Arbitration Intern
Definition: An individual
who would work closely with the Director of Commercial Services to:
- Communicate with mediators, parties, clients and vendors in person, by
phone, email and fax;
- Coordinate mediation/arbitration logistics;
- Utilize and update in-house database;
- Draft correspondence and documents;
- Analyze data and compile reports on mediation/arbitration evaluations;
- Invoice parties & clients;
- Coordinate with other departments in the office.
The Role of the Grant Writing Intern
Definition: The Grant Writing and Research Intern would assist the
Executive Director and Operations Manager to:
- Write and prepare grants
- Research potential funders
- Create new grants for MWI’s Public Service Initiatives (click

Qualifications
- Previous experience with writing and researching grants a plus
- Excellent writing, proofreading, and grant research skills
- Attention to
detail
- Ability to follow through with short and long-term projects in a timely
manner;
