Dispute Resolution Experience

Anthony Wanis-St. John has extensive experience mediating disputes within teams and partnerships in corporations as well as between unions and management, particularly in school districts throughout the US. In this capacity, he helps executives, business managers, engineers, consultants, and account representatives increase their negotiation skill while building valuable relationships inside and outside of their own organizations. Honors, Memberships, and Professional Activities

He is the author of Back Channel Negotiation (Syracuse University Press, 2011) and “Cultural Pathways in Negotiation,” which appeared in the Handbook of Dispute Resolution (Jossey-Bass, 2005). His conflict resolution-related work has appeared in journals such as International Negotiation, Negotiation Journal, Harvard Negotiation Law Review, International Peacekeeping and the Journal of Public and International Affairs.


Lectures and ADR Trainings Conducted

Dr. Wanis-St. John has consulted and provided training and coaching on the negotiation and conflict management challenges of clients throughout North America, the Middle East, South Asia, Europe, and Latin America such as American Express, Amgen, Bombardier Aerospace, Bristol Myers Squibb, BMC Software de Mexico, Cap Gemini Ernst & Young, Capital One, CNN, Counterpane, Eli Lilly, The Mathworks, Meredith Group, Hewlett Packard, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Takeda Pharmaceuticals, Visa International and many others. . He’s also worked with non-profit clients including the Social Justice Leadership Collaborative, the Strategic Account Management Association, universities and school districts throughout the United States. He has consulted with the World Health Organization, the World Bank, USAID, the US Department of State and the United States Institute of Peace. In his international work, he has worked with Darfur rebel groups to unify prior to sitting down to negotiations with the government of Sudan; provided negotiation training to Ugandan military deploying to Somalia as part of the AMISOM mission; and to Haitian civil society leaders preventing political violence in their communities. He is fluent in Spanish and French.

  • Research Associate with the Center for International Conflict Resolution, Columbia University
  • Doctoral Fellow at the Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School. He earned his PhD from Tufts University.
